1.
My name is Grant, and I’m autistic I was given an autism diagnosis at age 6. No explanation was given and no resources were offered At 22 I began learning for myself This is a tangible space I’m using it to show you what autism is in my life Tangible things are real. They can be felt without understanding My thoughts don’t always look like words because of my synesthesia In my mind I see patterns and hear sounds I’ve heard before. I can feel everything I hear and see
2.
I don’t know what a society accepting of autistic people looks like on my own. Autism is very different from one person to another. Our needs are met in different ways. To create this new status quo, there must be active and open dialogue which includes the autistic people in our lives. This is the shared responsibility of a tangible space.

MM Percussion Recital | Ann Arbor, MI

This single includes two original works for improvised body percussion and signal processing, recorded in live performance on March 8, 2024 at the University of Michigan. Copies of the recital poster, program, and program notes are also available for download.

My ongoing performance project, titled This is a Tangible Space, combines percussion with live audiovisual accompaniment to convey the sensory depth of autistic perception. Through this combination I'm sharing my lived experience as an autistic person and challenging the perception of autism as a pathology. The expression of stimming through body percussion ranges from pure self- stimulation to direct musical intention.

At the age of six, I was diagnosed autistic. With no further information, guidance, or support, I grew up with little understanding of autism beyond the generalized and often misleading knowledge shared collectively by our society. Finding the online autism community in 2022 enabled me to better understand myself and become involved in the community’s discourse. It was through this process that I greatly expanded my awareness of the ways in which autistic people, particularly adults, severely lack systemic support. Furthermore, I would learn how misinformation and stereotyping have marginalized the autism community.
